Meet Our Founder
Mike Kelly’s journey into the flooring industry started long before he founded Kelly Floors in 2009. Growing up, he was immersed in the trade, learning the ropes from his father, who began as a carpet installer in the 1970s and later built his own flooring business. Summers were spent working in the warehouse, assisting installers, and gaining hands-on experience with every aspect of the trade. Before his military service, Mike transitioned into an Assistant Project Manager role with his father’s company, further expanding his industry knowledge. After returning from his deployment in Iraq, he sought to diversify his skill set by working in low-voltage wiring and security for new home construction.
When the 2008 recession hit and forced him into an overwhelming workload, his father encouraged him to take a leap of faith and launch his own business. Drawing on his veteran background and industry expertise, Mike established Kelly Floors, focusing on federally funded projects and building a company grounded in integrity and quality.
Mike’s time in the Army National Guard, particularly his deployment to Iraq, had a profound impact on his leadership style and approach to business. He credits the military for instilling discipline, resilience, and an unyielding drive for success. He describes his transformation from a timid young man to a confident leader who believes that with the right mindset, anything is possible. That determination became the foundation of his business philosophy—never settling, never compromising, and always pushing forward. As the owner of Kelly Floors, he takes a hands-on approach, ensuring that his team shares his commitment to excellence. He leads by example, reinforcing core values like honesty, teamwork, and “doing the right thing” at every level of the company.
Under Mike’s leadership, Kelly Floors has reached several major milestones. The company has grown significantly, recently doubling in size and moving into its own office and warehouse facility. It has also expanded its reach, completing two of its largest contracts to date—the Kennedy Center Carpet Replacement project and the Census Bureau project in Suitland, MD. Additionally, Kelly Floors launched a new K-12 and Higher Education division, further strengthening its presence in the commercial flooring industry. Mike attributes this success to the dedication of his team, the strong relationships they’ve built with vendors and contractors, and their unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship and customer satisfaction.
Outside of work, Mike is a devoted husband and father to three children. His daughters are passionate about dance and gymnastics, while his son is an avid athlete involved in football, wrestling, basketball, and baseball. He finds immense motivation in providing for his family and ensuring they have the tools they need to succeed in life. Though his kids are still young, they enjoy visiting the warehouse and getting a glimpse of the business, with his son already aspiring to join Kelly Floors one day. In his free time, Mike enjoys weightlifting, playing golf, spending time with his family and friends, and traveling—whether to their beach house or an island in the Caribbean. A dedicated Washington Commanders fan, he knows the importance of balancing work with the things that bring him joy, keeping him motivated to continue growing both personally and professionally.
